Description
Final project for my First Nations art class, but I went back and did some retouching, brightened up the water and so on. My favourite part might be the kelp ovoids
The big whale is in the Northwest Coast style of art, from the First Nations that live in BC, Canada. It primarily uses three distinct shapes: ovoids (curved rectangles as seen in the central body), u-forms (seen on the nose), and split u-forms (seen on the tip of the dorsal fin.) There are tons of beautiful examples on Google if you're curious.
I was happy to get a chance to study under a professional NW Coast artist and learn about how traditional art forms are used today. I chose to depict a NW Coast-style orca along with a Western-style orca to show the interaction of cultures in my home province.
Ink, gouache, watercolour, and acrylic on watercolour paper (I'm really bad at limiting my mediums )

Nice art. You did a great job. I hope your teacher give you a good note for it.
